Margaret Cranford Kirkpatrick Wetzel once wrote: \"There are loads of people who love to be on committees and in clubs, who thrive on going to board meetings. But what I love most is seeing things grow.\" Maggie, as she was known to friends and family (even grandchildren!), passed away on May 22, 2008, of complications from Alzheimer's disease. She was 83. Her gift for nurturing development-whether in young children, philanthropic endeavors, her famous vegetable garden, or in the historic buildings she brought back to life in the Alexander Valley of Sonoma County-was plainly clear to everyone she knew. Maggie was born in Hampton, Virginia on April 30, 1925. In 1945 she married Harry H. Wetzel Jr. whom she met at an officers' club dance in Middletown, Pennsylvania. The couple lived in Santa Monica, California, Dayton, Ohio, and Scottsdale, Arizona, before settling in Palos Verdes Estates, California, where they raised their family of four and where Harry served as president and CEO of the Garrett Corporation. In 1978 she received a Bachelors Degree in art history from University of Southern California. The Wetzels were great supporters of the arts and Maggie served as a docent and later as a board member of the Los Angeles County Museum of Art. She served as head of the Blue Ribbon 400 group, founded by the late Dorothy Chandler, to raise money for the Los Angeles Music Center. Later, in San Francisco, she served on the boards of the San Francisco Opera and the San Francisco Museum of Art. In 1962, in partnership with their friends Russ and BJ Green, the Wetzels bought a piece of land in the Alexander Valley, California, on the site of Cyrus Alexander's original homestead. They and the Greens were among the first landowners to plant wine grapes in the Valley. In 1975, they established Alexander Valley Vineyards Winery. Run by their son Hank Wetzel, the winery produces premium varietal wines to this day. Over the years, they restored the buildings on the property and installed gardens and plantings, including an extensive vegetable garden for which Maggie was famous. Support of civic institutions continued after the Wetzels made Alexander Valley their permanent home. Beneficiaries included the Healdsburg Museum, the Santa Rosa Symphony and the Green Music Center in Rohnert Park. Most recently, they were the major donors for the Wetzel Emergency Department at Healdsburg Hospital. Even as her faculties began to slowly fade, Maggie remained a gardener at heart. When conversations became more difficult, you could still count on her to pick beans, cut asparagus and trim flowers. Survived by her husband, Harry H. Wetzel, Jr.; her children Sally FallonMorell, Hank Wetzel, Katie Wetzel Murphy, and John Wetzel and their spouses; her thirteen grandchildren and their spouses; her two (soon to be three) great grandchildren; her sister Sue Rogers and her brother Pete Kirkpatrick."},{"label":"Title","value":"Side 2"},{"label":"Filename","value":"cstr_doc_000191_02.jp2"}]}],"thumbnail":{"@id":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/sonomalibrary/iiif/3c5114ae-b5bd-4cb4-bcd9-5509003a1237/full/500,500/0/default.jpg","@type":"dctypes:Image","height":500,"width":500}}]}],"thumbnail":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/sonomalibrary/iiif/61c6d9a8-ed47-44ef-adfc-f33cfe80a6b8/full/300,300/0/default.jpg","logo":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/sonomalibrary/iiif/logo"}
