He was active in Northern California, including around Colusa, but spent the last part of his life in Santa Rosa, where he died on February 20, 1912. The 1900 United States Census records him as a widowed, traveling man, living with his cousin, Phillip W. Gardiner, and family at 633 Healdsburg (later Mendocino) Avenue. He served as a postmaster for the Sherwood post office in rural Mendocino County in the 1880s. His wife, Ellen C. \"Nellie\" Sherwood, was born in Wisconsin in August 1846 and had married Alfred Sherwood by the time of the 1870 census. Sherwood moved to what was later named Sherwood Valley in 1853 and  Sherwood Valley in September of 1853 and had had at least two Mahto Pomo wives with whom he had four surviving children when he married Nellie. She raised the children and provided some amount of support to his Pomo wives.
