We lived in Vanderveer Estates, a name way fancier than the buildings actually were. Vanderveer, at the time, had a reputation for violence. I only saw a violent confrontation one, and there didn't seem to be any danger for the kids. And there were lots and lots of kids. Halloween was a particular delight when we would go from apartment building to apartment building filling up a shopping bag with candy, returning home for another shopping bag, and then we were out to trick or treat in another of the many buildings. Each building had 36 apartments, and our block had, I believe 14 of those buildings. My early life was challenging. I had no skills for the world and no help, financial or otherwise, for education. I have a learning disorder that impacts my abiility to read and comprehend. That did not stop my learning, though, as I studied the world around me. My love of philosophy was fed by the values of the early 1970's, which was informed by the cultural revolution of the 1960's. I mourned the loss of the music whose philosophies shaped my values and grieved when Disco invaded our musical culture. I grieved the loss of the musical messages in response to the Viet Nam war and those messages which encouraged us to be truthful people, authentic people who cared about others. Still, I struggled to be that present and that free, because I was completely untrained in the basics of earning money to live. My mind was stuck in survival mode and I typed and typed until I developed repetitive strain symptoms. Out of either sheer accident or divine providence, I became a children's entertainer, a clown, throughout the San Francisco Bay Area. I share joy with others for a living, and get to relive my own harsh childhood, this time, in the realm of childlike magical thinking.
