Pepper moved to Sonoma County in 1858 after his lumber mill in Yuba County, Calif., burned down. He purchased 157 acres of a squatter's claim and established a nursery 6 miles west of Petaluma. He purchased another 98 acres which included what is now the intersection of Pepper Road and Pepper Lane.
