He first lived in Kenwood in 1967, which he initially found to be bucolic, sleepy, and rural. Richard's diverse professional life included genetics research, winery management at Beringer, and establishing his own successful software company, Gulson and Associates, which focused on business and wine production systems. Soon after settling in Kenwood, he was \"co-opted\" into civic duties, including serving as a fire district dispatcher starting in 1970, teaching 4-H veterinary science, and later supporting Critical Incident Stress Management. He founded the Kenwood Youth Soccer Club in 1978, helping lead the successful community effort to transform Shaw Park from a weed patch into a respected soccer field. He announced the 4th of July Pillow Fights for 37 years and was profoundly impacted by the tragic 1982 floods, where he was involved in the recovery of two young boys.
