She grew up in ethnically-diverse communities, first speaking Hungarian, then German, and upon entering elementary school, Serbian. By age thirteen, she had seen two wars fought in the streets of her hometown of Vršac: Hitler's forces conquering Yugoslavia in 1941, followed by the Russian Red Army liberation in 1944. Both wars left in their wake major upheaval -- ethnic tensions and persecutions; hardship and suffering. For Van Vranken, her experience under Tito's Communist rule included internment, separation from her parents and some siblings, forced labor, and a risky escape and flight. Reunited in Vienna, she and her family emigrated in 1949 to the United States, settling in California. Once able to resume her education, Van Vranken pursued Liberal Arts. She holds a Ph.D. from Stanford University in German Studies. As a tenured Professor at University of Redlands, she taught German and other literatures. After retiring, Van Vranken turned to writing. The Winds of Fortress Kula is her first book. Van Vranken lives in the Bay Area to be near her two daughters."},{"label":"Search SCL Digital Archives for this Author","value":["Van Vranken, Dora"]},{"label":"Search Author or Book in Library Catalog","value":"Search for works by Dora Van Vranken in the library catalog"},{"label":"Search Author in Open Library","value":"Search for works by Dora Van Vranken in Open Library"},{"label":"Sort Title","value":"Dora Van Vranken"},{"label":"Significant Title","value":"The winds of Fortress Kula"},{"label":"Digital Archives Identifier","value":"dora_van_vranken"},{"label":"Digital Archives Collection Name(s)","value":["Sonoma County Local Authors"]},{"label":"Date Added","value":"2019/10/16"},{"label":"Filename","value":"dora_van_vranken.jpg"},{"label":"Title","value":"Dora Van Vranken"},{"label":"Item Type","value":["Text"]},{"label":"Item Format or Genre","value":["Biography files","Bibliographies"]},{"label":"Search SC Local Arts for this Author or Artist","value":"Dora Van Vranken"},{"label":"Collection(s)","value":["Sonoma County Local Authors"]},{"label":"Author Name (Controlled)","value":["Dora Van Vranken"]}],"description":"Dora Van Vranken","sequences":[{"@type":"sc:Sequence","canvases":[{"@id":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/sonomalibrary/iiif/a214655d-6e7a-45ec-b630-413f1a52c86e/canvas/_1","@type":"sc:Canvas","label":"Dora Van Vranken","height":512,"width":385,"images":[{"@type":"oa:Annotation","motivation":"sc:painting","resource":{"@id":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/sonomalibrary/iiif/a214655d-6e7a-45ec-b630-413f1a52c86e/full/full/0/default.jpg","@type":"dctypes:Image","format":"image/jpeg","service":{"@context":"http://iiif.io/api/image/2/context.json","@id":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/sonomalibrary/iiif/a214655d-6e7a-45ec-b630-413f1a52c86e","profile":"http://iiif.io/api/image/2/level2.json","tiles":[{"width":512,"scaleFactors":[1]}]},"height":512,"width":385},"on":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/sonomalibrary/iiif/a214655d-6e7a-45ec-b630-413f1a52c86e/canvas/_1","metadata":[]}],"thumbnail":{"@id":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/sonomalibrary/iiif/a214655d-6e7a-45ec-b630-413f1a52c86e/full/500,500/0/default.jpg","@type":"dctypes:Image","height":500,"width":500}}]}],"thumbnail":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/sonomalibrary/iiif/a214655d-6e7a-45ec-b630-413f1a52c86e/full/500,500/0/default.jpg","logo":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/sonomalibrary/iiif/logo"}
