Born and raised in Point Marion, a small west Pennsylvania town, Sipe dated the former Winifred Wolfe while they attended rival high schools. He joined the Navy after high school in 1943, and served as a yeoman aboard the USS Tracy, a minesweeper, in the South Pacific. The couple married on June 12, 1944, while Dale Sipe was on leave, and a few years later he retired from active duty with the Navy. Sipe, who earned a degree in business administration, worked briefly for the Army Corps of Engineers in Sausalito, then moved to Sonoma County and became a court clerk in 1951. During his 32 years at the courthouse, Sipe clerked for Judges Hilliard Comstock, F. Leslie Manker, John H. Moskowitz and Bryan Jamar. The Sipes bought the Herald Recorder in the early 1950s, complementing his work at the courthouse. Sipe retired from the courts in 1983 and joined his wife at the newspaper, which they sold to a Los Angeles-based chain of legal newspapers in 1988.
