He and his wife Alice moved from Texas to California in 1945. They came to Santa Rosa in the early 1950s and became community activists. He and supporters of racial equality formed the Sonoma County Chapter of the NAACP in 1954, working in areas of motel and hotel service for blacks, banking, real estate and job opportunities. When lunch counters demonstrations took place in the American South, Gray led picketing in front of Santa Rosa's Kress and Woolworth Department Stores to remind local residents that discrimination was an issue anywhere in America. Gray helped build Community Baptist Church and worked as a counselor at Sonoma County Juvenile Hall.
