Michael Mullens, was born in Hawthorne, California, to parents who had moved from Childress, Texas, in 1932 seeking work, but was raised in El Monte, East Los Angeles, Mullens was inspired to pursue law while watching Perry Mason with his father. He attended high school at Arroyo High School in El Monte, junior college, Cal Poly Pomona for two years, and ultimately graduated from UCLA Law School in 1968. To avoid the draft during this time, he enlisted in the Reserve Officers Training Corps (ROTC) and subsequently served two years of active duty in the United States Army, assigned to the Military Police and fortunately stationed the entire time at the Presidio of San Francisco, where he met and married his wife, Liz. After his father became ill, the couple moved back to Los Angeles, and Mullens worked as a deputy district attorney in Orange County before relocating to Northern California in 1971 to take a job as an assistant district attorney in Sonoma County. Mullens was initially struck by the beauty and quiet nature of Kenwood, which his wife discovered and where they purchased a house on Cypress Avenue after a realtor showed them the property. He served as Sonoma County District Attorney for two terms, from 1995 to 2002, during which he oversaw the prosecution of several high-profile cases, including the Polly Klaas case. After losing his third election, he continued to work in Solano County, and post-retirement, served roles with Catholic Charities helping with deferred action immigration applications, Legal Aid, and as the dean of the Empire College of Law. Mullens and his family were active in the community, with Liz being involved in the Community Club, helping plant trees in Plaza Park and organizing opposition to moving high-powered PG\\&E lines, and their children participating in 4-H (raising lambs) and soccer. Mullens recalls attending local spots like Cafe Citti, Golden Bear, and the now-closed Bunny's Country Kitchen, where a high chair was specially purchased for his son Michael. He faced both floods (in 1986) and the devastating 2017 firestorm, which he calls the worst aspect of living in the area, requiring him to evacuate with his family and critical papers. After spending years as a caregiver for his wife, Liz, who passed away after planning a final family trip to Paris.
