She developed and administered a series of programs for North and South of Market Adult Day Health, now called 'Stepping Stone,\" that provided low-income housing and health care services for the frail and elderly who did not have much money. Her book, I'm not a Tourist ' I Live Here, is a unique guide to daily life in San Francisco. In addition to the usual descriptions of the city, she devotes several sections to cordial anecdotes about the street people, 'characters\" she routinely encountered and with whom she became acquainted, such as beggars, homeless and prostitutes. Meanwhile, she served several years as Clerk of the San Francisco Friends Meeting. During the Vietnam War, Elizabeth stopped paying certain taxes related to supporting the military, whereupon the Internal Revenue Service put a lien on her house to force her to pay. After the end of the apartheid policy in South Africa, she visited there as a part of a program to improve accessibility for disabled in the public transportation system. In 2002, just two months before the United States attacked Iraq, she was there on a peace mission for three weeks. Her book, Taking a Stand: A Guide to Peace Teams and Accompaniment Projects, reflects on various 'lessons learned\" based on her experiences. A life-long Quaker, Elizabeth grew up in the Boston area as the eldest of six children. Her parents were peace activists. After two years at Bryn Mawr, she married and moved with her husband to Cambridge, graduating from Radcliffe.
