More than a decade later, the simple line drawing inspired Pitré to write a children's book titled \"Frankie's First Halloween.\" The book about an amiable ghost who loves the holiday has been published by The Press at Cal Poly Humboldt. \"I have been writing for decades and this is my first published story. ... I have saved (that drawing) all these years thinking it might make a good story,\" Pitré said. A press release from The Press at Cal Poly Humboldt describes the 41-page book as such: \"Frankie loves Halloween -- there's just one hitch: he's a ghost. When the mischievous Evilena the Witch promises to brew a potion to transform him into a real boy, Frankie and his friend Mona the Mummy embark on a quest to find the fabled Enchanted Pumpkin. Will they uncover the pumpkin in time to make Frankie's Halloween dreams come true?\" Pitré said, \"Frankie has a goodness and sweetness about him that I think is endearing. He also is brave to pursue his dream as he willingly confronts some scary characters.\" Pitré -- has taught school since 1975 and currently teaches kindergarteners and first-graders at Alice Birney Elementary School in Eureka -- has long enjoyed the Halloween season. \"By raising my own four children, my grandson and through my many years of teaching, Halloween has always been a special day of the year for me,\" he said. \"I love to watch children's excitement and wonder at the day designed for their enjoyment.\" \"Frankie's First Halloween\" -- which is illustrated by artist and recent Cal Poly Humboldt graduate Cello Wicklin -- is part of a new children's book imprint launched by The Press at Cal Poly Humboldt, \"aimed at fostering collaboration between artists and authors for open-source projects. ... This imprint not only highlights local talent, but also enriches the literary landscape of Humboldt County with imaginative stories for children.\" Pitré says he is so thankful to Wicklin -- who also illustrated the children's book \"My Friend Petunia\" published recently by The Press at Cal Poly Humboldt -- for the imaginative illustrations in his new book. \"Sarah Godlin at The Press thought Cello would be a good fit for my story,\" Pitré said. \"I sent Cello a copy of my grandson's drawing and she did a wonderful job of reimagining my story in pictures.\" Pitré added, \"I am so lucky and so thankful to Sarah Godlin and The Press at Cal Poly Humboldt for choosing my book to be published. It has been a longtime dream of mine after so many years of no success. I have dozens of other picture book stories and chapter books and I hope I can be lucky again.\" \"Frankie's First Halloween\" is available to purchase in paperback at The Booklegger in Eureka, Northtown Books in Arcata and through amazon.com.
