The school was established in 1873 after Sheriff Samuel Potter built it on a portion of his ranch. Classes continued until 1961 when it was slated for demolition but was saved when the school was used as a set in the 1963 film 'The Birds' directed by Alfred Hitchcock. It has since become a popular tourist attraction. It stands across the street from the old Druid Hall.
