In the early 1980’s Santa Rosa Memorial Hospital initiated a bioethics committee. Dr. Gospe was one of its founding members and chaired this committee for over 20 years. Since his retirement in 1999, he has been the Medical Director of Ethics at Santa Rosa Memorial Hospital where he has continued his love of teaching, speaking, and writing. Dr. Gospe has published numerous articles on bioethics in the Sonoma County Medical Association’s journal Sonoma County Physician. He has presented many lectures on various topics in bioethics to hospitals, churches, and civic organizations and testified at the California State Senate in 1996 on Do Not Resuscitate Guidelines. He wrote his two collections of memoirs, “Illuminations in an Elevator: Evolution of a physician” and “Images from Childhood” as a way for his children to become better acquainted with their father. He also wrote a historical novelette, “Lady in Black, A woman’s journey” based on one of his relatives who escaped religious persecution in Switzerland and immigrated to America in 1754. His more recent book, “We Can, but Should We?: One physician’s reflections on end of life ethical dilemmas” was written for medical personnel as well as patients and their families.
