Finley (1870-1942), a California publisher for nearly half a century, was a conservationist and humanitarian who frequently used his position--and his newspapers--to fight for causes that were often unpopular. Born in Corvallis, Ore., in 1870, Finley moved to Sonoma County in 1876 with his parents, the Rev. Dr. William A. Finley and Sarah E. Latimer Finley. He began a printing business as a teenager that led to his establishment of the Evening Press as a daily newspaper in Santa Rosa in 1895. Two years later, the firm purchased the thriving Sonoma Democrat and her sister publication, the Daily Democrat, merging the three newspapers as the Press Democrat. With the birth of the Press Democrat, Finley became the lone publisher and editor. By 1927 he had purchased the rival Santa Rosa Republican and was operating the two newspapers simultaneously, though separately. He campaigned for the construction of the Golden Gate Bridge. He was also instrumental in establishing in 1936 the Sonoma County Fair Association. He founded the Santa Rosa Symphony, and he was instrumental in founding Santa Rosa Junior College."},{"label":"Subject (Person)","value":["Finley, Ernest Latimer, 1870-1942"]},{"label":"Source of Title and Description Note","value":"Title supplied by cataloger."},{"label":"Geocoding Status","value":["No geocoding"]},{"label":"Local History and Culture Theme","value":["Portraits"]},{"label":"City or Town","value":["Santa Rosa"]},{"label":"California County","value":["Sonoma"]},{"label":"State or Province","value":["California"]},{"label":"Country","value":["United States"]},{"label":"Subject (Time Period)","value":"1940-1949"},{"label":"Filename","value":"cstr_pho_001083.jp2"},{"label":"Credit line","value":"Courtesy, Sonoma County Library"},{"label":"Item Call Number(s)","value":"ARCHIVES PHOTO 1083;ANNEX PHOTO 1083"},{"label":"Subject keywords","value":"Portraits; Finley, Ernest Latimer, 1870-1942; 1940-1949; United States; California; Sonoma; Santa Rosa"},{"label":"Collection(s)","value":["Sonoma County Library Photograph Collection"]}],"description":"Portrait of Ernest Latimer Finley, 1941","sequences":[{"@type":"sc:Sequence","canvases":[{"@id":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/sonomalibrary/iiif/83d5a14f-8d06-46f6-b58e-f74dd94c1df9/canvas/_1","@type":"sc:Canvas","label":"Portrait of Ernest Latimer Finley, 1941","height":4184,"width":3016,"images":[{"@type":"oa:Annotation","motivation":"sc:painting","resource":{"@id":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/sonomalibrary/iiif/83d5a14f-8d06-46f6-b58e-f74dd94c1df9/full/full/0/default.jpg","@type":"dctypes:Image","format":"image/jp2","service":{"@context":"http://iiif.io/api/image/2/context.json","@id":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/sonomalibrary/iiif/83d5a14f-8d06-46f6-b58e-f74dd94c1df9","profile":"http://iiif.io/api/image/2/level2.json","tiles":[{"width":1024,"scaleFactors":[1,2,4,8]}]},"height":4184,"width":3016},"on":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/sonomalibrary/iiif/83d5a14f-8d06-46f6-b58e-f74dd94c1df9/canvas/_1","metadata":[]}],"thumbnail":{"@id":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/sonomalibrary/iiif/83d5a14f-8d06-46f6-b58e-f74dd94c1df9/full/500,500/0/default.jpg","@type":"dctypes:Image","height":500,"width":500}}]}],"thumbnail":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/sonomalibrary/iiif/83d5a14f-8d06-46f6-b58e-f74dd94c1df9/full/500,500/0/default.jpg","logo":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/sonomalibrary/iiif/logo"}
