Bromige was born in London, the son of a newsreel operator, and survived the German blitzkrieg there during World War II. He immigrated to Canada to live near his sister in Vancouver, earning an undergraduate degree in English from University of British Columbia. He then won a scholarship to UC Berkeley, where he earned a master's degree in English. He began teaching at Sonoma State in 1970 and stayed for 23 years.
