All those things which make the Sonoma wine country one of the most beautiful areas in America also mask a very simple fact: Making wine is an agricultural endeavor. What this simple fact means is that the bottle of wine you open with dinner will reflect the quality of the fruit from which it was made. The quality of that wine will also reflect the skill and dedication of the winemaker who transformed ripe grapes into wine. Yet, regardless of how talented a winemaker may be, mediocre fruit will result in good wine at best, inferior wine at worst. It is for this reason that we pay such close attention to our Russian River Valley vineyards."},{"label":"Title","value":"Page 1"},{"label":"Filename","value":"cstr_doc_000198_01.jp2"}]}],"thumbnail":{"@id":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/sonomalibrary/iiif/644d54c1-4ade-42ea-bc46-33766045d8db/full/500,500/0/default.jpg","@type":"dctypes:Image","height":500,"width":500}},{"@id":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/sonomalibrary/iiif/760c2529-e452-481f-a6da-d4db746b4fac/canvas/_2","@type":"sc:Canvas","label":"cstr_doc_000198_02","height":4000,"width":2111,"images":[{"@type":"oa:Annotation","motivation":"sc:painting","resource":{"@id":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/sonomalibrary/iiif/ffa1b686-0a65-4933-9385-2230a4c0cf7f/full/full/0/default.jpg","@type":"dctypes:Image","format":"image/jp2","service":{"@context":"http://iiif.io/api/image/2/context.json","@id":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/sonomalibrary/iiif/ffa1b686-0a65-4933-9385-2230a4c0cf7f","profile":"http://iiif.io/api/image/2/level2.json","tiles":[{"width":1024,"scaleFactors":[1,2,4]}]},"height":4000,"width":2111},"on":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/sonomalibrary/iiif/760c2529-e452-481f-a6da-d4db746b4fac/canvas/_2","metadata":[{"label":"Sort Title","value":"Page 2"},{"label":"Archival File Data Quality","value":["High resolution master file image (600 ppi)"]},{"label":"Transcript or Full Text","value":"This short self-guided tour is not meant to transform you into a vineyard expert, but rather to get you out into the vineyard itself. We hope this will provide you with a greater appreciation for the agricultural element of wine making. And we hope that the quiet beauty of the vineyard provides you with a calm respite. The numbered posts along the way correspond to numbered explanations in this pamphlet. When you are finished with the tour feel free to visit our tasting room to sample the product of our vineyards. Please take care not to leave anything behind. Place any throwaway items you may have in the garbage cans along the path. Also we ask that you restrain your temptation to pick fruit or take home a souvenir. New Petite Sirah 1 All vineyards begin with the planting of the vines. The young vines you see here will eventually bear fruit for Foppiano Vineyards' Petite Sirah. Planted in March 1991, these new vines are actually two different vines grafted together. The root portion, or rootstock, is a phylloxera-resistent Pinot St. George vine. (Phylloxera is a small insect which attacks the roots). Five months after this rootstock was planted we grafted Petite Sirah buds on to it. The result: A Petite Sirah-producing vine whose roots are not susceptible to the deadly Phylloxera. The first crop of usable grapes appears 3-4 years after planting. Napa Gamay & Petite Sirah 2 On either side of the path are examples of mature vines. On the right, again, is Petite Sirah planted in 1972. To the left is Napa Gamay, planted in 1965. One way to tell the difference between vines is to examine the leaf. Each type of grape vine produces a different looking leaf. The best way to tell the difference between two varieties of grapevines is to taste the product of the grapes they bear. Napa Gamay Wind Generator and Heaters 3 Like any other agricultural product, wine grapes are constantly at the mercy of Mother Nature. One of the greatest threats to a vineyard is a severe spring frost when the vines are beginning to flower. The wind generator you see here is the best defense against frost damage. The wind generator is used in conjunction with heaters spread throughout the vineyard. If, during the night, the temperature dips below 34F alarms go off in various bedrooms, alerting sleeping vintners to the onset of a frost. Heaters are fired up. Wind generators are started. The wind generator draws warm air down among the vines, mixing it with cold air. A severe frost can potentially destroy an entire year's crop. The best red wines of Bordeaux and Califor nia are made from the loosely-packed berries which form on Cabernet vines. These particular vines were planted in 1980. Though they are capable of yielding 8-9 tons of grapes per acre, we purposely take measures such as pruning and bunch thinning to reduce their fruit yield. The result is more concentrated fruit capable of producing the finest of red wines. Chardonnay 5 Chardonnay is far and away the most popular varietal among those who drink premium wines. Like Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay is a varietal capable of producing exquisite wines all over the world. Here you can see Chardonnay vines in two very different stages of maturity. They are in their prime at this moment. On the left are Chardonnay vines planted in 1988. In 1990 we pulled out 80 year-old Petite Sirah vines replacing them with the new vines you saw at the beginning of this tour. For many years the Petite Sirah of California was thought to be the same grape as the Syrah of the northern Rhone Valley in France. Research has shown however, that Petite Sirah is in fact the Duriff grape, also of the Rhone Valley in France. Years ago the Petite Sirah was used to firm up and give more body and substance to red wines made from lesser grapes. Though sometimes used in the same way today, Petite Sirah is now recognized as a grape of distinction used to create elegant red wines which have the capacity to age quite well. The Foppiano family has been growing wine grapes on this land for over 95 years. John Foppiano, an Italian immigrant, founded the winery and vineyards in 1896. Three generations later, his descendents continue to make fine wine. Foppiano Vineyards has the longest history of continued family winery ownership in Sonoma County. It is that history of working together as a family which imbues us with a belief we hope to pass on to you: Wine is the drink of moderation. And regardless of the varietal you are drinking or the region from which it came, it is best enjoyed with friends and family at mealtime. We hope you have enjoyed this short tour, and that you will continue to support the California wine industry.
