Hower was born on Dec. 14, 1934 in San Francisco, he lived in Sonoma County since 1949 and was the only child of the late George Robert Hower and Loretta Hawley Hower. He was a graduate of Santa Rosa High School and SRJC where he wrote for their school papers. He served in the US Army from 1954 to 1956. He graduated from San Francisco State College in 1959 and was hired by The Press Democrat. His career in journalism spanned nearly 40 years during which he covered everything from ice hockey to ice carving, serving as sports editor and copy editor, and reporting on beats including general assignment, news features, profiles, food, and garden. He retired in 1998. In addition to his journalism career, Hower was  also a photographer and specialized in wedding photography. He was also active in TRADJASS, a traditional jazz group; the SRJC Autobiography Class; the Oakmont Fitness Club Board. He was also chairman of the Oakmont Study Symposium from 2002 to 2004.
