Priest (6 Jun 1852 - 5 Mar 1916) was a San Francisco portrait and commercial photographer. He was born in Massachusetts, but had moved with his mother and stepfather, William H. Smith,  to San Francisco by 1870. During his early life, he worked as a carpenter, first with his stepfather, and later on his own. In 1885 he married Frances C Lauder. He changed careers around 1889, becoming a photographer and partner with Franklin George Abell (1844-1910) at 723 Market Street. Abell subsequently returned to Portland and Priest operated the studio alone. At the time of the photograph, his studio was located at 2518 Mission Street, San Francisco, Calif., but this print was made after 1901, when he had relocated to to 2532 Mission Street.
