For wine drinkers it often goes like this: \"Someday, I'd like to work for a small winery, learn the trade, and become a world famous winemaker.\" For Lance Cutler the fantasy came true. Lance graduated college and went into education, teaching at inner city schools in Watts and East Los Angeles. Unorthodox, and wildly creative, he achieved great successes using his own non-traditional methods. The tension of inner city conditions and administrative bureaucracy was tremendous. As Lance puts it, \"Teaching got me into drinking, and drinking led me into the wine business.\" Leaving Los Angeles in 1977 for the wine country of Sonoma, Lance soon landed a job at Gundlach- Bundschu Winery, the oldest family-owned vineyard in California. His home winemaking experience, and his love of wine allowed him to rise rapidly. In 1981 Lance was named winemaker at Gundlach-Bundschu Winery. In 1983, Lance was named Sonoma County Winemaker of the Year. By 1985 he had also started his own small, premium winery: The Cutler Cellar. In fifteen vintages as winemaker, Lance has shown himself to be adept and talented in his second chosen profession winning numerous awards, medals and accolades. Beyond his skills as winemaker, however, hides a unique talent. Howard Goldberg of the New York Times wrote, \"There are five funny people in the wine business. Lance Cutler is two of them.\" Joe Pollack of the St Louis Post Dispatch said, \"If you like to laugh while you drink good wine, Cutler fills the bill in both divisions.\" Jim McCullough, author of Greetings from Vineburg, wrote, \"No other winemaker can detonate entire auditoriums of the terminally bored into explosive laughter.\" Cutler is simply the best show in the wine business. In 1994, Lance added yet another line to his already impressive resume. Writing under his pseudonym, Jake Lorenzo, he authored Cold Surveillance: The Jake Lorenzo Wine Columns. The book is a collection of humorous, insightful columns about the wine industry and life in general. 1996 brought a full length (1 hr. 15 min.), color video and workbook package. Making Wine at Home the Professional Way with Lance Cutler. Currently, Lance is working on a new book entitled The Tequila Lover's Guide to Mexico.
