Chapin died early Monday morning of pneumonia at the Sonoma Valley Hospital. Bill filled his 85 years fully. A listing of his occupations includes professor, editor, writer, World War II pilot, and fashion model. Bill was also an accomplished poker player, athlete, and mentor to aspiring writers. Bill was born in Rutland, Vermont, and graduated from Dartmouth College. He also attended MIT. During WWII, he became a bomber pilot. His plane was shot down over Yugoslavia and he was wounded during the bailout. His leg had to be amputated and he became a Prisoner of War. Bill earned the Distinguished Flying Cross, Air Medal with Oak Leaf Clusters, and the Purple Heart, among others. Bill was married to O'Hara Chapin for more than 50 years. The couple lived in Sausalito before moving to Sonoma in 1983. They also spent a year in Japan while Bill worked as the copy desk chief of the Pacific Stars and Stripes, published in Tokyo for the U.S. military forces. Bill worked for The San Francisco Chronicle for 15 years, where he became Chief Copy Editor in addition to stints as a reporter and sports columnist. After retiring from The Chronicle, he became a full professor at San Francisco State University in the journalism department. Bill would most likely wish to be remembered for his writing. He is the author of \"Milk Run\" (1992), which recounts his wartime experiences, and \"Wasted: The Story Of My Son's Drug Addiction\" (1972), which was nominated for a Pulitzer Prize. Bill also wrote countless published articles, short stories, and letters to the editor."},{"label":"Search SCL Digital Collections for this Author","value":["Chapin, Bill, 1919-2004"]},{"label":"Search Author or Book in Library Catalog","value":"Search for works by Bill Chapin in the library catalog"},{"label":"Search Author in Open Library","value":"Search for works by Bill Chapin in Open Library"},{"label":"Author Birth Date","value":"1919"},{"label":"Sort Title","value":"Bill Chapin (1919-2004)"},{"label":"Significant Title","value":"Wasted : The Story of My Son's Drug Addiction"},{"label":"Digital Collections Identifier","value":"bill_chapin"},{"label":"Digital Collection Name(s)","value":["Sonoma County Local Authors"]},{"label":"Date Added","value":"2016/08/11"},{"label":"Filename","value":"bill_chapin.jpg"},{"label":"Main or Supplied Title","value":"Bill Chapin (1919-2004)"},{"label":"Item Type","value":["Text"]},{"label":"Item Format or Genre","value":["Biography files","Bibliographies","Portraits","Photographs"]},{"label":"Search SC Local Arts for this Author or Artist","value":"Bill Chapin (1919-2004)"},{"label":"Collection(s)","value":["Sonoma County Local Authors"]},{"label":"Author Name","value":["Bill Chapin (1919-2004)"]}],"description":"Bill Chapin (1919-2004)","sequences":[{"@type":"sc:Sequence","canvases":[{"@id":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/sonomalibrary/iiif/681c5c41-ccc4-4e76-a2a1-ebe2a5a29917/canvas/_1","@type":"sc:Canvas","label":"Bill Chapin (1919-2004)","height":400,"width":400,"images":[{"@type":"oa:Annotation","motivation":"sc:painting","resource":{"@id":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/sonomalibrary/iiif/681c5c41-ccc4-4e76-a2a1-ebe2a5a29917/full/full/0/default.jpg","@type":"dctypes:Image","format":null,"service":{"@context":"http://iiif.io/api/image/2/context.json","@id":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/sonomalibrary/iiif/681c5c41-ccc4-4e76-a2a1-ebe2a5a29917/","profile":"http://iiif.io/api/image/2/level2.json","tiles":[{"width":512,"scaleFactors":null}]},"height":400,"width":400},"on":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/sonomalibrary/iiif/681c5c41-ccc4-4e76-a2a1-ebe2a5a29917/canvas/_1","metadata":[]}],"thumbnail":{"@id":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/sonomalibrary/iiif/681c5c41-ccc4-4e76-a2a1-ebe2a5a29917/full/500,500/0/default.jpg","@type":"dctypes:Image","height":500,"width":500}}]}],"thumbnail":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/sonomalibrary/iiif/681c5c41-ccc4-4e76-a2a1-ebe2a5a29917/full/500,500/0/default.jpg","logo":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/sonomalibrary/iiif/logo"}
