He moved to Guerneville in 1923 and started working in the kitchen of the Nolan family’s Guerneville Hotel. He later became the bartender at The Louvre, which was also owned by the Nolans. After both establishments closed in the early 1940s, Wong opened Charlies’ in 1948--his own bar and restaurant--at the corner of Armstrong Wood Road and Watson Road. He ran Charlie’s until retiring in 1976.
