Peterson was one of seven sons of early homesteaders Martha Steele Peterson and William Peterson, who homesteaded a quarter section along Santa Rosa Creek adjacent to present[-day Guerneville Highway. His brother, A. D. Peterson also grew hops in several locations in the area.  Raford Peterson had an eight kiln operation and the family operated the ranch for nearly 100 years (the kilns burned to the ground in 1945; the Raford Inn on Wohler Road is the only remaining portion of the ranch).The Raford Peterson house is now an officially designated historic landmark.
