W. (Henry William) Bradley (1813-1891) came to California in the Gold Rush and opened a photography studio in 1850. William Herman Rulofson (1826-1878), a Canadian, also came to California in 1849 and began photographing miners in Sonora. The two men partnered to open a gallery at Sacramento and Montgomery Streets in San Francisco . The Bradley & Rulofson studioThe Photographic Art Gallery -- became a place of luxury and throughout the 1860s and early 1870s, Rulofson created life-sized half-length portraits of divas and notables. After Rulofson's death from a fall from the gallery roof in 1878, financial problems forced to gallery to relocate, and eventually close.
