She connected with the community through a local babysitting co-op and the Kenwood Elementary School, where her children attended via inter-district agreements. Her diverse work history included woodworking, building kitchen cabinets, and various part-time jobs. Kathy dedicated years to civic causes, including volunteer groundwater monitoring, measuring the static water level in numerous wells across the area twice a year due to concerns about water sustainability. She served as the President of the all-volunteer Valley of the Moon Alliance (VOTMA) starting around 2011, continuing the legal challenge against the Graywood Ranch/Kenwood Ranch resort project, a fight she noted was lost but which delayed the project significantly. She observed that Kenwood has suffered a loss of community feeling because the high cost of living has displaced young families, and the influx of vacation rentals leaves many houses empty.
