After receiving my Ph.D. in 1963, I taught at Harvard, SUNY (Stony Brook), West Virginia University ( Dept. Chairman), and SDSU, with short interludes at University of Wales and University of Rhode Island. Most of my early writing was on comparative subjects: Kafka, Thomas Mann, Swift, Shakespeare, John Clare, Thomas Hardy, and contemporary English literature, as well as language and Composition. Beginning in the early '80's, they were increasingly on Children's Literature. In the 1960's I wrote several children's books, two of them illustrated by Edward Gorey, and recently reissued (Abrams). Most recently, I translated Die Schwarzen Bruder (\" The Black Brothers \"), a best-selling pictorial novel from the 1940's (Front St. Press), and Quint Buchholz's The Collector of Moments (Farrar, 1997), which won the Batchelder Honor award for books translated into English that year. My The Annotated Charlotte's Web (Harper, 1994) will be reissued in Spring, 2006, in time for the new movie version. In 2000 I also co-curated and wrote the catalogue, Dancing Line and Merry Color , for the exhibition of the works of illustrators, Margot and Kaethe Zemach, at The Eric Carle Museum of Picture Book Art, Amherst.   Since \"retirement,\" I've been writing book reviews (mainly The Boston Globe ), drawing, painting poorly, sculpting, traveling occasionally, and walking.
