She attended Chinese school after the regular school day and spoke Cantonese at home and in the neighborhood. Up until the end of World War II, Chinatown was a small, close-knit community whose members were under pressure to conform to the ideals of Chinese culture. In Nim and the War Effort, Milly’s first book for children, a young Chinese American girl, trying to prove her patriotism during World War II, risks her family’s disapproval by collecting newspapers for the war effort. When Nim is seen riding through Chinatown with her haul of papers in a police wagon, the news quickly reaches and enrages her grandfather. The story is autobiographical but speaks directly to the experiences of all bicultural children in their struggles to find out who they are. Milly revisits Chinatown in her picture book, Earthquake. Basing her story on her mother’s experiences in the 1906 San Francisco catastrophe, she tells of the family’s escape across the burning, crumbling city to safety. With an endnote explaining the details of the quake, and including newly discovered information, Earthquake gives us a fascinating picture of a city coping with an emergency; it is also a moving tribute to the hundreds of Chinese Americans who lost their homes, and in some cases their lives, in that event. Milly Lee's latest book is Landed, which is the story of her father-in-law's entry into the United States during the time of the Chinese Exclusion act. Sun is 12 years old in 1882 when he travels with his merchant father to the U.S. He has memorized answers to the hard questions they ask on Angel Island, but almost fails the test after waiting alone for four months before being called. Author's note and list of resources help illuminate this dark period in American history. When her three children were nearly grown, Milly Lee returned to college-the University of California at Berkeley and the University of San Francisco-to become a school librarian. She worked at Burlingame’s Lincoln School, the Sonoma Valley High School, and the Sonoma County Office of Education. She was active in professional organizations (the American Library Association, the California School Library Association, the California Reading Association), which led to friendships with colleagues all over the country. Since they retired in 1991, Milly and her husband, Kearn, have traveled to many of the places they read about but never dared to dream of when they were growing up in San Francisco’s Chinatown."},{"label":"Search SCL Digital Archives for this Author","value":["Lee, Milly"]},{"label":"Search Author or Book in Library Catalog","value":"Search for works by Milly Lee in the library catalog"},{"label":"Author Website","value":"View personal or professional website for Milly Lee"},{"label":"Search Author in Open Library","value":"Search for works by Milly Lee in Open Library"},{"label":"Sort Title","value":"Milly Lee"},{"label":"Significant Title","value":"Landed"},{"label":"Digital Archives Identifier","value":"milly_lee"},{"label":"Digital Archives Collection Name(s)","value":["Sonoma County Local Authors"]},{"label":"Date Added","value":"2019/08/26"},{"label":"Filename","value":"milly_lee.jpg"},{"label":"Title","value":"Milly Lee"},{"label":"Item Type","value":["Text"]},{"label":"Item Format or Genre","value":["Biography files","Bibliographies","Portraits","Photographs"]},{"label":"Search SC Local Arts for this Author or Artist","value":"Milly Lee"},{"label":"Collection(s)","value":["Sonoma County Local Authors"]},{"label":"Author Name (Controlled)","value":["Milly Lee"]}],"description":"Milly Lee","sequences":[{"@type":"sc:Sequence","canvases":[{"@id":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/sonomalibrary/iiif/454b8369-65fa-4dd0-b4dd-9be425943e1e/canvas/_1","@type":"sc:Canvas","label":"Milly Lee","height":723,"width":636,"images":[{"@type":"oa:Annotation","motivation":"sc:painting","resource":{"@id":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/sonomalibrary/iiif/454b8369-65fa-4dd0-b4dd-9be425943e1e/full/full/0/default.jpg","@type":"dctypes:Image","format":"image/jpeg","service":{"@context":"http://iiif.io/api/image/2/context.json","@id":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/sonomalibrary/iiif/454b8369-65fa-4dd0-b4dd-9be425943e1e","profile":"http://iiif.io/api/image/2/level2.json","tiles":[{"width":512,"scaleFactors":[1,2]}]},"height":723,"width":636},"on":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/sonomalibrary/iiif/454b8369-65fa-4dd0-b4dd-9be425943e1e/canvas/_1","metadata":[]}],"thumbnail":{"@id":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/sonomalibrary/iiif/454b8369-65fa-4dd0-b4dd-9be425943e1e/full/500,500/0/default.jpg","@type":"dctypes:Image","height":500,"width":500}}]}],"thumbnail":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/sonomalibrary/iiif/454b8369-65fa-4dd0-b4dd-9be425943e1e/full/500,500/0/default.jpg","logo":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/sonomalibrary/iiif/logo"}
