As a young woman, Brownie wrote to Luther Burbank hoping that they were related (they were not). Eventually she moved from New York State to Santa Rosa where she worked as a secretary for Luther Burbank and as a caretaker for Burbank's mother. During her stay from 1906-07, Brownie kept a \"Wonder Book\" detailing her most exciting moments in Burbank's employ like meeting Jack and Charmian London. The \"Wonder Book\" was filled with photos captioned by Brownie. Her nickname is possibly a reference to the old \"brownie\" Kodak camera. In 1907, her former employer, Stanley W. Hayes, followed her to California and married her. After a short California honeymoon, they moved to Geneva, New York. Marie Swanson, another Luther Burbank employee and close friend, visited her there. Brownie wrote a short story entitled, \"Jumbo,\" about a small dog owned by Burbank. In the story, she describes her admiration for \"Boss\". She sent Burbank a copy of the story early in 1908. It is in the Luther Burbank Home & Gardens archive today, as are several studio portraits of Brownie from this period. In 1908, Brownie died as a complication of the birth of her first child. Her son survived and treasures the \"Wonder Book\" as a link to a mother he never knew. Burbank described Brownie as a \"friend\" who brightened everyone's day. Judging from her candid photographs of Burbank and his visitors, Brownie's lively enthusiasm and playfulness affected those around her."},{"label":"Maps/StreetView","value":"View location in Google Maps"},{"label":"Photo Sub- Category","value":["with Friends"]},{"label":"Photo Category","value":["Burbank"]},{"label":"Class","value":["Photograph"]},{"label":"Date Created or Published (clean) (1)","value":"D:00 M:00 Y:1906"},{"label":"DateType-PublicationStatus","value":["s"]},{"label":"Creation Date (Original)","value":"1906"},{"label":"Description","value":"Photo print \"#23\".
