Her father was Oscar Charles, son of George, who had come from Missouri to California in the 1860s. Her mother, Mary Call, was the daughter of George Washington Call who purchased Fort Ross and the surrounding property in 1874. Barbara lived and remained on the same ranch established by her parents in 1907. In 1945, she married George H. Black, from the Dry Creek Valley. They raised sheep, sheering and selling their wool. In the 1960s, they began the Munez Ranch Quarter Horses business. They later purchased a ranch in Lincoln where they also raised cattle. Barbara was true to her word, as honest as the day is long and very proud of her family heritage. She loved to hunt deer, ride and show horses, follow the SF Giants and especially enjoyed visitors stopping by at her ranch. She would share stories from her rich history and talked about the present with the many changes going on \"up on the ridge\" where she lived, as well as current events. Barbara was a member of many organizations, the North Bay Wool Growers Auxiliary serving two terms as president, 11-year Fort Ross School Board member, The American Quarter Horse Association, and the Farm Bureau. She passed away peacefully on September 20th, 2015, at the age of 96."},{"label":"Search SCL Digital Archives for this Author","value":["Black, Barbara Mercedes, 1919?-2015"]},{"label":"Search Author or Book in Library Catalog","value":"Search for works by Barbara Mercedes Black in the library catalog"},{"label":"Search Author in Open Library","value":"Search for works by Barbara Mercedes Black in Open Library"},{"label":"Author's Place(s) of Residence","value":["Santa Rosa"]},{"label":"Sort Title","value":"Barbara Mercedes Black (1919?-2015)"},{"label":"Significant Title","value":"Fort Ross Creamery"},{"label":"Digital Archives Identifier","value":"barbara_mercedes_black"},{"label":"Digital Archives Collection Name(s)","value":["Sonoma County Local Authors"]},{"label":"Date Added","value":"2018/04/23"},{"label":"Filename","value":"barbara_mercedes_black.jpg"},{"label":"Title","value":"Barbara Mercedes Black (1919?-2015)"},{"label":"Item Type","value":["Text"]},{"label":"Item Format or Genre","value":["Biography files","Bibliographies","Portraits","Photographs"]},{"label":"Search SC Local Arts for this Author or Artist","value":"Barbara Mercedes Black (1919?-2015)"},{"label":"Collection(s)","value":["Sonoma County Local Authors"]},{"label":"Author Name (Controlled)","value":["Barbara Mercedes Black (1919?-2015)"]}],"description":"Barbara Mercedes Black (1919?-2015)","sequences":[{"@type":"sc:Sequence","canvases":[{"@id":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/sonomalibrary/iiif/3292e584-c05a-44e7-8a4e-8b394e3b8454/canvas/_1","@type":"sc:Canvas","label":"Barbara Mercedes Black (1919?-2015)","height":450,"width":450,"images":[{"@type":"oa:Annotation","motivation":"sc:painting","resource":{"@id":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/sonomalibrary/iiif/3292e584-c05a-44e7-8a4e-8b394e3b8454/full/full/0/default.jpg","@type":"dctypes:Image","format":"image/jpeg","service":{"@context":"http://iiif.io/api/image/2/context.json","@id":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/sonomalibrary/iiif/3292e584-c05a-44e7-8a4e-8b394e3b8454","profile":"http://iiif.io/api/image/2/level2.json","tiles":[{"width":512,"scaleFactors":[1]}]},"height":450,"width":450},"on":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/sonomalibrary/iiif/3292e584-c05a-44e7-8a4e-8b394e3b8454/canvas/_1","metadata":[]}],"thumbnail":{"@id":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/sonomalibrary/iiif/3292e584-c05a-44e7-8a4e-8b394e3b8454/full/500,500/0/default.jpg","@type":"dctypes:Image","height":500,"width":500}}]}],"thumbnail":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/sonomalibrary/iiif/3292e584-c05a-44e7-8a4e-8b394e3b8454/full/500,500/0/default.jpg","logo":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/sonomalibrary/iiif/logo"}
