For this project, teams of Sonoma State University students conducted these interviews under the direction of Steve Estes, Professor of History. They are a mix of video and audio recordings, each guided by a set of 22 questions developed by Professor Estes. conducted by Sonoma State University students under the direction of Steve Estes, Professor of History, to celebrated the City of Rohnert Park's 60th anniversary. He was commissioned as a second Lieutenant in the United States Air Force after obtaining a B.A. in Industrial Arts at San Francisco State University in 1958. In the Air Force he was a navigator and Missile Launch Crew Commander working with nuclear missiles during the Cold War. In 1970, prior to his being sent to Vietnam, Robert and his wife Beverly purchased a home in B section of Rohnert Park. This is where they raised their four children. After leaving the Air Force he worked at Shell Oil Company as well as the U.S. Post Office, as a letter carrier and postmaster, until his retirement in 1998. In his retirement he was Chairman of the Rohnert Park Memorial Day event for 20 years and established their Avenue of the Flags. Other ways he has given back to the community are by coaching/managing youth soccer, fundraising for Boys Scouts and other non-profits, serving on the boards of different veteran’s organizations, and volunteering at the Schulz Museum. In 2017 he was elected Veteran of the Year by the Veterans of Sonoma County and in 2022 he was honored at the Rohnert Park 60th Anniversary celebration. His wife Beverly worked at the B park swimming pool, coached the Stingrays, and ran a swim school in the Safreno’s indoor pool.
