Born in 1956, Margaret (Golis) Sorentino, was one years old when her family moved into the very first house built in the “A” section of Rohnert Park, which earned them the title of being first official residents of Rohnert Park. Margaret’s father, Paul Golis is considered the founder of Rohnert Park. His dream to establish a planned community with affordable housing that centered around schools, parks, and pool, was fully realized in 1962 when Rohnert Park became incorporated as the population began to grow. Although Margaret was six years old, she recalls the parades and celebrations that took place to mark the occasion. The youngest of five children, Margaret and her siblings all attended Rancho Cotati High School. While in high school, Margaret first met her husband while attending a football game and will have been together fifty years this year. After finishing high school, Margaret moved to San Diego, where she attended college. Years later, she returned to Sonoma County, making Cotati her home, where she lives today.
In this interview, Margaret reflects on her childhood memories of growing up in Rohnert Park, providing insight into the early years of Rohnert Park and the many changes that have occurred over the years. Although preferring to stay out of politics herself, Margaret provides a unique perspective about her father’s legacy and the early local political scene. Other topics the interview examines changes in population, housing, transportation, and education.
