Edward Sewall was the last American square-rigged ship to make a westward passage around Cape Horn. That voyage, of 293 days duration, was one distinguished for pain and suffering as well as length--over two months were necessary just to round the cape. Star of Shetland was also one of the last Alaska Packers Association sailing ships left--the Alaska Packers Association sold almost all others before the end of 1936. Launched in 1899, Edward Sewall first entered the case oil trade, coal trade, and hauled other bulk cargoes worldwide often visiting Honolulu and other west coast portraits In 1910, while journeying from Newport News to Hawaii with coal, the ship caught fire. During 1916, Edward Sewall became the property of the Texas Company of Port Arthur, Texas. Joseph E. Sewall first captained Edward Sewall for a couple of voyages from the ship's launch, and then Richard Quick commanded from 1901 until sold to the Alaska Packers Association in 1922 when the ship's name changed to Star of Shetland. By 1936, big sailing ships were almost gone and this photograph serves as a valedictory to thousands of years of voyaging under sail.;Ship Name: Star of Shetland; Sailed: 1899-1936; Type: Steel 4-masted bark; Built by: Bath, Maine by Arthur Sewall and Company; Dimensions: 332' x 45.3' x 25.5'; Tonnage: 3206 tons."},{"label":"Reproduction Details (Physical Items)","value":"Print is reversed."},{"label":"Source of Title and Description Note","value":"Title supplied by cataloger."},{"label":"Maps/StreetView","value":"View location in <a href=\"https://www.google.com/maps/@37.819722,-122.478611,15z\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Google Maps</a>"},{"label":"Map Zoom Level","value":["15"]},{"label":"Geocoding Status","value":["Approximate geocoding"]},{"label":"Longitude","value":"-122.478611"},{"label":"Latitude","value":"37.819722"},{"label":"Street Address","value":"Golden Gate Bridge, San Francisco, California"},{"label":"Local History and Culture Theme","value":["Transportation"]},{"label":"Geographic Metadata Source","value":["GNIS"]},{"label":"City or Town","value":["San Francisco"]},{"label":"California County","value":["San Francisco"]},{"label":"State or Province","value":["California"]},{"label":"Country","value":["United States"]},{"label":"Subject (Topical)","value":["Bridges","Ships"]},{"label":"Subject (Time Period)","value":"1930-1939"},{"label":"Geographic Feature","value":["Golden Gate (Calif.)","United States Highway 101","Conzelman Road"]},{"label":"Filename","value":"cstr_pho_035619.jp2"},{"label":"Credit line","value":"Courtesy, Sonoma County Library"},{"label":"Item Call Number(s)","value":"ANNEX PHOTO 35619"},{"label":"Subject keywords","value":"Transportation; 1930-1939; Bridges; Ships; United States; California; San Francisco; San Francisco; Golden Gate (Calif.); United States Highway 101; Conzelman Road"},{"label":"Single date for City of SR GIS","value":"D:00 M:00 Y:1936"},{"label":"Collection(s)","value":["Sonoma County Library Photograph Collection"]}],"description":"Star of Shetland passing under the partially constructed Golden Gate Bridge, September 19, 1936","sequences":[{"@type":"sc:Sequence","canvases":[{"@id":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/sonomalibrary/iiif/24c68b02-edd5-473b-bfef-0b60a0028110/canvas/_1","@type":"sc:Canvas","label":"Star of Shetland passing under the partially constructed Golden Gate Bridge, September 19, 1936","height":4668,"width":5818,"images":[{"@type":"oa:Annotation","motivation":"sc:painting","resource":{"@id":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/sonomalibrary/iiif/24c68b02-edd5-473b-bfef-0b60a0028110/full/full/0/default.jpg","@type":"dctypes:Image","format":"image/jp2","service":{"@context":"http://iiif.io/api/image/2/context.json","@id":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/sonomalibrary/iiif/24c68b02-edd5-473b-bfef-0b60a0028110","profile":"http://iiif.io/api/image/2/level2.json","tiles":[{"width":2048,"scaleFactors":[1,2,4]}]},"height":4668,"width":5818},"on":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/sonomalibrary/iiif/24c68b02-edd5-473b-bfef-0b60a0028110/canvas/_1","metadata":[]}],"thumbnail":{"@id":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/sonomalibrary/iiif/24c68b02-edd5-473b-bfef-0b60a0028110/full/500,500/0/default.jpg","@type":"dctypes:Image","height":500,"width":500}}]}],"thumbnail":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/sonomalibrary/iiif/24c68b02-edd5-473b-bfef-0b60a0028110/full/500,500/0/default.jpg","logo":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/sonomalibrary/iiif/logo"}
