Burbank's family and the Grant family were close personal friends. Burbank saw the merit in Grant's plans from both an economic and a natural basis--cheap electric power for industry, agriculture, and individuals from a natural source.  He envisioned steam for heating of hot houses and was interested in the environmental impact of its use.  Grant initially used his own funds to drill his first steam well at the Geysers in 1919.  In 1921 he formed the Geysers Development Company, publicly selling stock to raise capital to fund further expansion of his ideas.  Burbank invested a large amount of his own money, becoming a major shareholder, to continue Grant's dream.  Unfortunately, success was to escape John Grant.  His company ceased commercial operation in 1935.  Corrosion, equipment failure, lack of funds, and years of legal battles doomed his project to failure.  Grant died in the middle 1940's a poor man, unable to see the results of his dream.--Excerpted from paper by Kay Voliva.
