Award-winning wines from Pat Paulsen Vineyards. Pat and Jane Paulsen bought their ranch in Sonoma County's Alexander Valley, near Cloverdale in the renowned Wine Country of California in 1970. A year later they were tending their first vineyard, 10 acres of Cabernet Sauvignon. In 1975 they planted seven acres of Sauvignon Blanc followed three years later with Chardonnay.  In 1979 the Paulsens built a winery in the midst of their vineyards. and they hired Jamie Meves, a graduate in enology from the University of California at Davis, as winemaker. Their first bottling came' in 1980, with 1,600 cases of Sauvignon Blanc. A year later the Cabernet Sauvignon was ready, along with the unique Pat Paulsen Muscat Canelli. The first Chardonnay was released in 1984.  The best way to fully appreciate the qualities of a fine wine is to taste it, and visitors to Pat Paulsen Vineyards' tastingroom are encouraged to do just that. The tasting room occupies a colorful old wood-frame building in Paulsen's Asti Village, across the scenic Russian River from the winery. Purchased by the Paulsen family in October, 1985, the Village also has shops, a tree-shaded picnic area and the Old Oak of Asti, dating back 300 years.  Drawing media attention to his campaign for the Oval Office in 1988, Pat Paulsen became the self-proclaimed Mayor of Asti in a bipartisan ceremony July 3, 1986, which featured the traditional pomp, accoutrements and far-fetched campaign promises beloved of politicians everywhere.  The tasting room and retail outlet are open daily from 10 to 6, except for Thanksgiving and Christmas Days. PAT PAULSEN VINEYARDS, 25510 River Road P.O. Aged 12 to 18 months in American oak barrels, and showing moderate tannin levels, this Cabernet is meant for early consumption. Though showing well at release, it will continue to gain bottle complexity for two or three years, and will maintain a peak quality level for an additional three to five. Sonoma County Sauvignon Blanc 1982 Bronze-1983 Sonoma County Harvest Fair Bronze-1984 International Eastern Wine Competition 1983 Silver-1984 Sonoma County Harvest Fair 1984 Gold-1985 San Francisco Fair and Exposition In 1984 the winery began a vineyard selection program to create the potential for a special Select\" bottling, as well as a regular Sonoma County bottling. At the heart of this program is Pat Paulsen's own award-winning Alexander Valley Estate Vineyard, which has produced subtle yet distinctive wines since the first bottling by Chateau St. Jean in 1977. By drawing from the major viticultural areas of Sonoma County, there is the opportunity to balance the best individual attributes of fruit grown in diverse regions and to showcase exceptional grapes from special vintages. Sonoma County Chardonnay 1983 Silver-1985 Reno Wine Competition 1984 Silver-1986 Les Amis du Vin Wine. Judging Chardonnay is possibly the most difficult white grape to work with, yet it is considered the most stylish and serious of dry white wines. The winery supplements its own Alexander Valley Estate grapes with fruit from carefully chosen vineyards on the Russian River and in Dry Creek Valley. Leaning toward a lightly oaked, medium bodied style emphasizing fruit and balanced acid, the wine is carefully aged in large French oak puncheons for three to five months. Its greatest, most complex development occurs in the bottle, as youthful edges soften and the wine becomes an enriching partner for delicate foods. Sonoma County Muscat Canelli 1982 Gold-1983 San Francisco Fair and Exposition Gold-1983 Sonoma County Harvest Fair 1983 Gold-1984Riverside County Farmer's Fair Chairman's Award-1984 Riverside County Farmer's Fair Silver (Best of Class)-1984 International Eastern Wine Competition 1984 Double Gold-1985 San Francisco Fair and Exposition 1985 Silver-1986 Orange County Fair Unlike most Muscats, which are produced as sweet dessert wines, the Paulsen Canelli was created as a dry, Alsatian style wine. Its versatility complements many types of food-not only fruit and cheese, but sausages, flavorful meats and vegetables, even some curries! It is a truly unusual wine, and will surprise you with its perfumey aroma and dry, acid-balanced flavor. A perennial medal winner, this wine is is produced each year in very limited quantities. Sonoma County Refrigerator White 1984 Gold-1985 San Francisco Fair and Exposition Silver-1985 Riverside Farmer's Fair 1985 Silver-1985 California State Fair. With the thought that it was time to emphasize the pure enjoyment of wine for what it is, Pat Paulsen Vineyards created a dry, white jug wine in 1984 with a lighthearted name and a label that exploits Pat's well honed sense of humor. A blend of Gewurztraminer, Sauvignon Blanc and Chardonnay, this wine displays an aromatic intensity, and is eminently drinkable with fish or fowl. It should not be bottle aged too long. American Gothic Red Drawing from events and emotions associated with their own agrarian adventure, the Paulsens have revived the traditional attitudes of hard work, honest living and \"the check is in the mail\" for the purpose of creating this robust, dry, red table wine. Produced from 100 percent Gamay Beaujolais, it goes well with down-home cookin' or the gal next door. No strangers to unpredictable hardships, the Paulsens are responding to the plight of today's farmers by pledging one dollar from the sale of each bottle of this wine to Farm Aid, the National Farm Relief Program."},{"label":"Title","value":"Side 2"}]}],"thumbnail":{"@id":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/sonomalibrary/iiif/923ae1b5-9f15-4d44-b728-7338c6f6b884/full/500,500/0/default.jpg","@type":"dctypes:Image","height":500,"width":500}}]}],"thumbnail":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/sonomalibrary/iiif/e8161e6e-927c-4fe0-98cd-e51dfc11b489/full/300,300/0/default.jpg","logo":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/sonomalibrary/iiif/logo"}
