In his own words, 'The main thrust of my work has been the application of nonviolent techniques to challenge racial discrimination and segregation.\" George served prison time for refusing to register for the draft in 1940 (along with seven other Union Theological Seminary students). When released, he went to Chicago to finish his graduate education and continued courting his wife, Jean, whom he met before he went to prison and who had visited him faithfully while he was there. They were married soon after his release. George was prepared to spend his life as a Methodist minister, but he was quickly recruited by A.J. Muste to work for the Fellowship of Reconciliation (FOR). While continuing his work with FOR, he helped found the Congress of Racial Equality (CORE) and became its Executive Director. He worked closely with Bayard Rustin and James Farmer, and joined in the first 'freedom ride\" into the South in April 1947. The 'Campaign to Defy Unjust Laws,\" sponsored by the African National Congress, drew George's attention to South Africa in 1952. As Executive Secretary of CORE he corresponded with Walter Sisulu, who was coordinating the campaign with Nelson Mandela and Oliver Tambo. George then organized the American Committee on Africa and served as its Executive Director for 26 years, working to bring African liberation leaders to the U.S. for speaking tours and to raise funds for their work at home. George made many trips to Africa and befriended the heroes of the national resistance movements. He was often invited to one or another of these countries as an honored guest, making ten trips there between 1981 and 1999. In April 2010 George and Jean were invited by the president of South Africa to be honored at its anniversary celebration of the beginning of Mandela's presidency. George received an award given each year to one person from outside of Africa who had been involved in their liberation struggle."},{"label":"Search SCL Digital Archives for this Author","value":["Houser, George M., 1916-2015"]},{"label":"Search Author or Book in Library Catalog","value":"Search for works by George M.
