Born in Cuba, Estebanez graduated from the National School of Art in Havana with a master's degree in art and became the official sculptor for Cuban president Fulgencio Batista. In 1960, Estebanez left Cuba following the communist overthrow of Batista's government. Estebanez arrived in the United States unable to speak English with her 10 year-old-son, Jorge, and a $5 bill in her purse. She chose to settle in Petaluma, California because she had a brother living there. At first Estebanez worked as a chicken plucker at a local poultry plant before she was able to resume her art career. For a time she was employed part-time as a 're-toucher\" at Decker's Photo Studio. Estebanez also held a position with Kresky's Sign, communicating with her supervisor through drawings and sign language. Estebanez taught classes privately and at night at Petaluma High School; led tours abroad, and created a prolific body of work, including murals, bas reliefs, sculpture, public statues, and paintings. In 1978 she joined the National Art Board of the American League of Pen Women. Estebanez also hosted a 7-part television series entitled 'How to Sculpt with Rosa\" on KQED's Open Studio. She died in 1992."},{"label":"Search SCL Digital Archives for this Author","value":["Estebanez, Rosa, 1927-1991"]},{"label":"Search Author or Book in Library Catalog","value":"Search for works by Rosa Estebanez in the library catalog"},{"label":"Search Author in Open Library","value":"Search for works by Rosa Estebanez in Open Library"},{"label":"Author's Place(s) of Residence","value":["Petaluma"]},{"label":"Sort Title","value":"Rosa Estebanez (1927-1991)"},{"label":"Significant Title","value":"How to Sculpt with Rosa"},{"label":"Digital Archives Identifier","value":"rosa_estebanez"},{"label":"Digital Archives Collection Name(s)","value":["Sonoma County Local Authors"]},{"label":"Date Added","value":"2017/01/13"},{"label":"Filename","value":"rosa_estebanez.jpg"},{"label":"Title","value":"Rosa Estebanez (1927-1991)"},{"label":"Item Type","value":["Text"]},{"label":"Item Format or Genre","value":["Biography files","Bibliographies","Portraits","Photographs"]},{"label":"Search SC Local Arts for this Author or Artist","value":"Rosa Estebanez (1927-1991)"},{"label":"Collection(s)","value":["Sonoma County Local Authors"]},{"label":"Author Name (Controlled)","value":["Rosa Estebanez (1927-1991)"]}],"description":"Rosa Estebanez (1927-1991)","sequences":[{"@type":"sc:Sequence","canvases":[{"@id":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/sonomalibrary/iiif/1582f622-c4a1-4fe4-ba9e-efadbfa729aa/canvas/_1","@type":"sc:Canvas","label":"Rosa Estebanez (1927-1991)","height":400,"width":400,"images":[{"@type":"oa:Annotation","motivation":"sc:painting","resource":{"@id":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/sonomalibrary/iiif/1582f622-c4a1-4fe4-ba9e-efadbfa729aa/full/full/0/default.jpg","@type":"dctypes:Image","format":"image/jpeg","service":{"@context":"http://iiif.io/api/image/2/context.json","@id":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/sonomalibrary/iiif/1582f622-c4a1-4fe4-ba9e-efadbfa729aa","profile":"http://iiif.io/api/image/2/level2.json","tiles":[{"width":512,"scaleFactors":[1]}]},"height":400,"width":400},"on":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/sonomalibrary/iiif/1582f622-c4a1-4fe4-ba9e-efadbfa729aa/canvas/_1","metadata":[]}],"thumbnail":{"@id":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/sonomalibrary/iiif/1582f622-c4a1-4fe4-ba9e-efadbfa729aa/full/500,500/0/default.jpg","@type":"dctypes:Image","height":500,"width":500}}]}],"thumbnail":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/sonomalibrary/iiif/1582f622-c4a1-4fe4-ba9e-efadbfa729aa/full/500,500/0/default.jpg","logo":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/sonomalibrary/iiif/logo"}
