They ran Frenchy's Scavenger Service, a local garbage company, for 11 years before selling it in the late 1970s. Joe remembered growing up when Kenwood's population was only 150 people and the phone system operated via a rural \"party line\" requiring an operator. Joe was instrumental in conceiving and organizing the original 4th of July pillow fights as a desperately needed fundraiser for the volunteer fire department. Joe was an early member of the fire department when equipment was rudimentary, and Denise later joined, serving first as a dispatcher starting in 1972 before becoming a firefighter herself in 1990. During the 2020 Glass Fire, they served as key support staff at the firehouse, assisting law enforcement and feeding the fire crews, an experience which highlighted the immense community outpouring of aid. They hope that Kenwood preserves its small-town values of kindness, cooperation, and neighborly outreach, but Joe lamented the deteriorated condition of the local infrastructure, particularly the roads and drainage systems."},{"label":"Description","value":"<p>Brent Moore interviewed Joe and Denise Benguerel, Kenwood residents, on October 31, 2024 in their home as part of the Kenwood Oral History project.</p><p>Joe \"Frenchy\" Bengueral and Denise Benguerel are long-time residents who moved to Kenwood in the 1940s and 1950s, respectively, experiencing a bucolic town with a minuscule population and a rudimentary phone system relying on a switchboard operator.
