After graduating from Trinity University in 1966, he moved to Chicago, where he worked first for Social Security, then as a supervisor in the toy department at Montgomery Ward catalog sales. He excelled at Commerce Clearinghouse, a legal reference publisher that paid for his law school and where he created the , before relocating to California in 1972. Gamel was immediately drawn to the beauty of Adobe Canyon Road near the town of Kenwood and settled permanently in Kenwood in the late 1970s, establishing a life that included an 18-month tenure in the art department at . He became pivotal in local journalism, relaunching the  newsletter as the community-focused  in the late 1980s.
