She edited the anthology Scratch: Writers, Money, and the Art of Making a Living (Simon & Schuster, 2017) and founded the online magazine of the same name (2013–2016). In 2012 she founded the crowd-sourced website \"Who pays writers?\" and in 2020 she donated the site to the Freelance Solidarity Project. Martin was previously managing editor of Francis Ford Coppola’s literary and art magazine, Zoetrope: All-Story,  which during her tenure won the National Magazine Award for fiction, and she has been an editorial contributor to Playboy (for the articles). She has worked in varied editorial and writing capacities with nonprofit organizations, arts organizations, publishers, and authors. Her work has appeared in The New Yorker, Virginia Quarterly Review, The Cut, Pacific Standard, Aeon Magazine, Hazlitt, Nieman Storyboard, and The Awl, among other publications. She was born and raised in Santa Cruz, California and has lived in San Francisco, New York, Paris, Boston, and Portland, Oregon.
