Susan's writing career began in the mid-1970s as a newspaper reporter in Northern California. Her coverage of the health care industry led to a series of positions in hospital media relations, including editor of employee publications for Kaiser Permanente, the world's largest health maintenance organization. She later served as editor of award-winning employee publications for McKesson Corp. in San Francisco. Since 1988, Susan has worked as a freelance writer and has been retained as an organizational journalist by more than 100 corporations and nonprofit agencies across the country. In 1994, Susan became a firefighter and emergency medical technician as a way of serving her community in rural Sonoma County, California. Half the members of her first firehouse in the town of Freestone were women. Following the September 11 terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center, she and her colleagues were acutely aware of the absence of women in media portrayals of rescue workers at 'Ground Zero.\" Susan combined her knowledge of the fire service with her experience as a writer to conceive of the idea for the book, Women at Ground Zero: Stories of Courage and Compassion, with fellow author,Mary Carouba"},{"label":"Search SCL Digital Archives for this Author","value":["Hagen, Susan"]},{"label":"Search Author or Book in Library Catalog","value":"Search for works by Susan Hagen in the library catalog"},{"label":"Author Website","value":"View personal or professional website for Susan Hagen"},{"label":"Search Author in Open Library","value":"Search for works by Susan Hagen in Open Library"},{"label":"Author's Place(s) of Residence","value":["Santa Rosa"]},{"label":"Sort Title","value":"Susan Hagen"},{"label":"Significant Title","value":"Women at Ground Zero : Stories of Courage and Compassion"},{"label":"Digital Archives Identifier","value":"susan_hagen"},{"label":"Digital Archives Collection Name(s)","value":["Sonoma County Local Authors"]},{"label":"Date Added","value":"2015/12/03"},{"label":"Filename","value":"susan_hagen.jpg"},{"label":"Title","value":"Susan Hagen"},{"label":"Item Type","value":["Text"]},{"label":"Item Format or Genre","value":["Biography files","Bibliographies","Portraits","Photographs"]},{"label":"Search SC Local Arts for this Author or Artist","value":"Susan Hagen"},{"label":"Collection(s)","value":["Sonoma County Local Authors"]},{"label":"Author Name (Controlled)","value":["Susan Hagen"]}],"description":"Susan Hagen","sequences":[{"@type":"sc:Sequence","canvases":[{"@id":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/sonomalibrary/iiif/0bc3537a-0928-4b9c-a7be-40e52114bf31/canvas/_1","@type":"sc:Canvas","label":"Susan Hagen","height":450,"width":450,"images":[{"@type":"oa:Annotation","motivation":"sc:painting","resource":{"@id":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/sonomalibrary/iiif/0bc3537a-0928-4b9c-a7be-40e52114bf31/full/full/0/default.jpg","@type":"dctypes:Image","format":"image/jpeg","service":{"@context":"http://iiif.io/api/image/2/context.json","@id":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/sonomalibrary/iiif/0bc3537a-0928-4b9c-a7be-40e52114bf31","profile":"http://iiif.io/api/image/2/level2.json","tiles":[{"width":512,"scaleFactors":[1]}]},"height":450,"width":450},"on":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/sonomalibrary/iiif/0bc3537a-0928-4b9c-a7be-40e52114bf31/canvas/_1","metadata":[]}],"thumbnail":{"@id":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/sonomalibrary/iiif/0bc3537a-0928-4b9c-a7be-40e52114bf31/full/500,500/0/default.jpg","@type":"dctypes:Image","height":500,"width":500}}]}],"thumbnail":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/sonomalibrary/iiif/0bc3537a-0928-4b9c-a7be-40e52114bf31/full/500,500/0/default.jpg","logo":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/sonomalibrary/iiif/logo"}
