As a teaching artist of incarcerated youth and adults, I haven't been too happy with shelter-in-place being referred to as \"lockdown.\" People locked up in our jails, prisons, and ICE detention centers are literally in lockdown, meaning isolation from all contact with the outside world. In honor of Black Lives Matter and the disproportionate number of black and brown members of our society impacted by incarceration, I decided to write a book of poetry interwoven with the voices of men and women with whom I've worked so they could be heard.
