C. Wohlbruck was born in New Jersey in 1879 and lived initially in Massachusetts, where he learned photography and earned a living as a traveling school photographer, but lived most of his adult life in Califorrnia. He came west in 1912 and continued his career as a school photographer before launching a new business as a postcard photographer and also was one of the first to develop the gas station convenience store with three \"canteen service stations\" at Emigrant Gap, Echo Summit and Donner Park on the Lincoln Highway (U.S. 40 -- now U.S. 80). His service station and store at Emigrant Gap were converted to park headquarters after Donner Memorial State Park was established and Wohlbruck lost his lease in 1928. In addition to creating postcards, Wohlbruck was also a collector of horse drawn vehicles and early automobiles, which were at one point housed in a museum in Redwood City, Calif.
