He entered public service around this time, being appointed tax assessor and collector. His duties included supervising the county census, which helped determine the apportionment of representatives to the Mississippi Territorial Assembly. In this letter from Moore to the governor of the Mississippi Territory David Holmes, Moore states that the census for the counties of the Mississippi Territory has been completed. At the time this letter was written, Moore was also serving as a representative to the Mississippi and the Alabama Territorial Houses. Moore would go on to become governor of Alabama from 1829 to 1831. He later served in the Alabama Senate and the U.S. Congress.
