Trinh is the oldest out of 9 children in his family; he has 2 younger brothers and 6 younger sisters. His childhood memories include receiving gifts and \"li xi\" during Tet and wishing older relatives a prosperous new year. His favorite food that his mother cooked was pork and pickled cabbage. Trinh's father held a position in the village and specialized in a blend of Western and Eastern teaching. He taught all the children in the family himself, emphasizing the importance in education and living by the proverb, \"trong sech co vang\" or \"In books, there is gold.\" When Trinh was of age, he attended the school Chu Van An in Saigon. He remembers having close friends with whom he would share food and study. In 1953, Trinh went home to visit with the intention of returning to school. However, he decided to stay at home and opened his own school in his village. He married in February 1954, and in July, his entire family and village escaped to South Vietnam. He recalls that the troupe got lost at Hai Duong, and Trinh had to direct the villagers to a nearby shelter. Once they arrived in the South, Trinh wished to continue to help his family and his village members. He returned to Chu Van An to go to school. On night in May 1955, Trinh was kidnapped by 2 people armed with guns who accused Trinh of being a follower of President Ngo Dinh Diem. Trinh was jailed and was threatened to be killed. During this time, Trinh reunited with his uncle who was also captured, and together they met a stranger who saved both of their lives. They then worked for this man by cooking, washing dishes, etc. until they were released. After, Trinh proceeded to attend law school where he obtained a law degree when he graduated in 1958. He then joined the army and was stationed at Ban Me Thuot until 1968. Trinh spoke of the differences he observed between the regimes of President Ngo Dinh Diem and that of President Nguyen Van Thieu. During President Diem's office, Trinh felt that Vietnam was more peaceful, whereas during President Thieu's office, both Viet Cong and American forcers were more active, causing the war to become stronger. Having worked alongside Americans in the war, Trinh mentioned that the Americans he worked with were very helpful and were always willing to help. Trinh's brother was also in the army; however, he and his son escaped Vietnam by boat and went missing. To this day, they have not been found. Trinh and his family of 9 escaped Vietnam by boat in April 1975. They were out in the ocean for 2 days until a larger ship brought them to a refugee camp in a Philippine island. Trinh recalled that this refugee camp held over 10,000 Vietnamese refugees. Trinh and his family stayed for 2 months for health checkups and to process paperwork to be transferred to America. Trinh and his family were then brought to a refugee camp in Indiantown Gap, Pennsylvania where they remained for 3 months until a church agreed to sponsor the entire family. Trinh's first job in the United States was at IBM where he worked as an assembler for a year before he moved to Galveston, Texas. There he and his family managed a convenience store for a chain brand for two years. After transferring to and working for 7/11 for three years, Trinh bought his own store to begin building a family business. He then proceeded to become the owner of 3 supermarkets and 9 convenience stores. Trinh has 8 children, all of which have graduated and have their own families. Trinh lives in Pearland where he owns 10 acres of land with the intention of one day building a small community for his entire family to live."},{"label":"Abstract","value":"This recording and transcript form part of a collection of oral history interviews conducted by the Vietnamese American Heritage Foundation and donated to the Chao Center for Asian Studies at Rice University.
