He is currently based in New York and Shanghai. Zhang graduated from the Department of Fine Art at Shanghai Theatre Academy in 1978, majoring in oil painting. After graduating he started working for Shanghai Art Museum, later becoming its first director of the Curatorial and Art Research Department in 1986, and in 1987 became Assistant Director of the Museum. In 1987, he was invited by the Asian Cultural Council of the Rockefeller Foundation in New York for an academic study visit, which was his first time to the US.\nOver the course of forty years, Zhang has created works in various mediums, from photography, ink installation, video, performances to painting.
