He was born into a family of Korean pastors. His family moved to Hawaii and eventually moved to Houston in 2018. Daniel attended the University of Hawaii at Manoa and studied psychology. Afterward, he became very involved in a church, where he began doing A/V work. Mr. Yoo recounts his experiences with “spiritual abuse” at this church. At this time, he also met his wife and got married at his Church. He then did A/V for a boys’ school theater program and then worked for Rice University doing A/V. He currently works for the Houston-Galveston Area Council as an audio-visual administrator. He currently lives in Houston with a daughter. This interview covers Daniel’s experience growing up as a pastor’s kid and contrasts his experience with that of his brother, Joseph. He reflects on the Korean traditions his family celebrated along with his parents’ parenting styles. He talks about his experience with his Polynesian-Samoan roommates and how he was drawn into a Hawaiian church he now describes as a cult. He delves into the nature of A/V work and how it is often a thankless profession. He narrates some experiences he’s had working at Rice and ends the interview with a message for his daughter."},{"label":"Abstract","value":"This item is part of a collection that includes images and ephemera related to interviews conducted by the Houston Asian American Archive (HAAA) since 2010."},{"label":"Time Span","value":["2020s"]},{"label":"Date","value":"D:12 M:11 Y:2024"},{"label":"People and Organizations","value":["Yoo, Daniel"]},{"label":"Title","value":"Daniel Yoo"},{"label":"Interviewee(s)","value":["Yoo, Daniel"]}],"description":"Daniel Yoo","sequences":[{"@type":"sc:Sequence","canvases":[{"@id":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/rice/iiif/973d4a2e-08f1-4374-8332-c059bdbdadf4/canvas/_1","@type":"sc:Canvas","label":"Daniel Yoo","height":3772,"width":2832,"images":[{"@type":"oa:Annotation","motivation":"sc:painting","resource":{"@id":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/rice/iiif/973d4a2e-08f1-4374-8332-c059bdbdadf4/full/full/0/default.jpg","@type":"dctypes:Image","format":"image/jpeg","service":{"@context":"http://iiif.io/api/image/2/context.json","@id":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/rice/iiif/973d4a2e-08f1-4374-8332-c059bdbdadf4","profile":"http://iiif.io/api/image/2/level2.json","tiles":[{"width":1024,"scaleFactors":[1,2,4]}]},"height":3772,"width":2832},"on":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/rice/iiif/973d4a2e-08f1-4374-8332-c059bdbdadf4/canvas/_1","metadata":[]}],"thumbnail":{"@id":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/rice/iiif/973d4a2e-08f1-4374-8332-c059bdbdadf4/full/500,500/0/default.jpg","@type":"dctypes:Image","height":500,"width":500}}]}],"thumbnail":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/rice/iiif/973d4a2e-08f1-4374-8332-c059bdbdadf4/full/500,500/0/default.jpg","logo":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/rice/iiif/logo"}
