His father had immigrated by means of the \"paper son\" method and his mother, as a mail order bride. He grew up in a nearby town called Rolling Fork, Mississippi. Along with his parents and three brothers, he lived in a large store that they called a supermarket. For college, he moved to Houston and attended the University of Houston. However, during his time as a student there, he was drafted for the military. Upon return from his service, he began work at Texas Commerce Bank (now JP Morgan Chase Bank) to support his wife and newborn daughter. He was employed there until he retired at the age of 57.
