Despite the difficulties, his family emphasized education, and he aimed to pass the college exam to avoid military service. However, in 1975, he had to evacuate, leaving his education incomplete. Donald and his family secured a place on the last merchant ship out of Vietnam, eventually reaching a refugee camp before being sponsored by a Chinese-American family in California. Despite initial language barriers and discrimination, he found a Vietnamese-American community and began building a life in the United States. In the U.S., Donald pursued higher education while working full-time and eventually earned a BS and MS in electrical engineering. He developed a successful career, received multiple patents for his innovative work, and started a family. He returned to Vietnam after 42 years, witnessing the country's transformation, and continues to appreciate the opportunities and freedom the United States offers. Donald is a proud Vietnamese that hopes for better assimilation of Asian Americans into society and encourages his daughters to solve problems and lead balanced lives. Tune in to learn of the transforming journey from growing up during the Vietnam War to reestablishing community and life in the US. Hear about the inquisitive and determined mind that has 6 patents to his name, with 7 more pending approval."}],"description":"Donald Siu","sequences":[{"@type":"sc:Sequence","canvases":[{"@id":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/rice/iiif/7224fd41-facb-4740-8464-1f58829a4b7c/canvas/_1","@type":"sc:Canvas","label":"Donald Siu","height":1616,"width":2872,"images":[{"@type":"oa:Annotation","motivation":"sc:painting","resource":{"@id":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/rice/iiif/7224fd41-facb-4740-8464-1f58829a4b7c/full/full/0/default.jpg","@type":"dctypes:Image","format":"image/jpeg","service":{"@context":"http://iiif.io/api/image/2/context.json","@id":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/rice/iiif/7224fd41-facb-4740-8464-1f58829a4b7c","profile":"http://iiif.io/api/image/2/level2.json","tiles":[{"width":1024,"scaleFactors":[1,2,4]}]},"height":1616,"width":2872},"on":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/rice/iiif/7224fd41-facb-4740-8464-1f58829a4b7c/canvas/_1","metadata":[]}],"thumbnail":{"@id":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/rice/iiif/7224fd41-facb-4740-8464-1f58829a4b7c/full/500,500/0/default.jpg","@type":"dctypes:Image","height":500,"width":500}}]}],"thumbnail":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/rice/iiif/7224fd41-facb-4740-8464-1f58829a4b7c/full/500,500/0/default.jpg","logo":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/rice/iiif/logo"}
