Her father died when she was one year old. Her older sister disappeared when Vu was thirteen, leaving behind two children whom Vu helped raise alongside her ailing mother. Due to poverty, Vu attended school only through third grade and began working at age eight. In 2006, she joined a Vietnamese government labor export program to Jordan. After ten days of exploitative conditions at a garment factory, she led a strike with 275 other Vietnamese women. Facing imprisonment upon return to Vietnam, she escaped Jordan and lived as a refugee in Thailand. In 2012, Vu immigrated to Houston, where she lives with her son and daughter-in-law and works at Lukin Family Dentistry. A colon cancer survivor, Vu has testified before Congress about human trafficking. In this interview, Annie Phuong Anh Vu reflects on growing up in Lao Cai, the loss of her father and sister, exploitation in Vietnams labor export program, surviving as a refugee in Thailand, and rebuilding her life in Houston. She discusses her transition from restaurant work to dentistry, faith, her and her advocacy against labor exploitation. Vu also shares her commitment to helping others through volunteer work at nursing homes and supporting elderly Vietnamese immigrants."},{"label":"Abstract","value":"This item is part of a collection that includes images and ephemera related to interviews conducted by the Houston Asian American Archive (HAAA) since 2010."},{"label":"Time Span","value":["2020s"]},{"label":"Date","value":"D:15 M:12 Y:2024"},{"label":"People and Organizations","value":["Vu, Annie Phuong Anh"]},{"label":"Title","value":"Annie Phuong Anh Vu oral history interview"},{"label":"Interviewee(s)","value":["Vu, Annie Phuong Anh"]}],"description":"Annie Phuong Anh Vu oral history interview","sequences":[{"@type":"sc:Sequence","canvases":[{"@id":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/rice/iiif/5dbcc3a7-1d13-45d4-a110-c661c7e0b9f0/canvas/_1","@type":"sc:Canvas","label":"Annie Phuong Anh Vu oral history interview","height":1639,"width":1010,"images":[{"@type":"oa:Annotation","motivation":"sc:painting","resource":{"@id":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/rice/iiif/5dbcc3a7-1d13-45d4-a110-c661c7e0b9f0/full/full/0/default.jpg","@type":"dctypes:Image","format":"image/jpeg","service":{"@context":"http://iiif.io/api/image/2/context.json","@id":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/rice/iiif/5dbcc3a7-1d13-45d4-a110-c661c7e0b9f0","profile":"http://iiif.io/api/image/2/level2.json","tiles":[{"width":512,"scaleFactors":[1,2,4]}]},"height":1639,"width":1010},"on":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/rice/iiif/5dbcc3a7-1d13-45d4-a110-c661c7e0b9f0/canvas/_1","metadata":[]}],"thumbnail":{"@id":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/rice/iiif/5dbcc3a7-1d13-45d4-a110-c661c7e0b9f0/full/500,500/0/default.jpg","@type":"dctypes:Image","height":500,"width":500}}]}],"thumbnail":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/rice/iiif/5dbcc3a7-1d13-45d4-a110-c661c7e0b9f0/full/500,500/0/default.jpg","logo":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/rice/iiif/logo"}
