It is the largest city of Africa and is of great interest to the tourist because of its warmth of Oriental color.  Will you step into the midst of this crowded Cairo thoroughfare?  You think you have wandered into the Arabian Nights.  The street is narrow, winding, and dirty beyond belief, but it has a charm from which the Westerner cannot escape. Here is the open booth of the barber, shaving the heads of the faithful with Oriental solemnity.  Nearby is the little table of the street restaurant.  Through the throng pass water-carriers, laden with heavy skins.  The woman of the poorer classes, a child astride hip or shoulder, passes the mystic Cairo houri, veiled save for her thrilling black eyes. But most striking of all are the turbans of every hue.  The color of the turban distinguishes the different sects, and since the orthodox length for a believer's turban is seven times the circumfrence of his head (in order that it may ultimately serve its purpose of a winding sheet), the mass of color is considerable.  Add to this kaleidoscopic variety of color the effect of plodding camels, tiny donkeys, barking dogs and a thousand-and-one street cries, and you will appreciate the fantastic charm of a Cairo street.
