His occupation both here in the United States and during his time in Vietnam is a mechanic for air conditioners. He is Catholic. Nguyen Van Nhu arrived in the United States on 24 July 1980. Nguyen Van Nhu studied in Saigon for 2.5 years before becoming a mechanic for air conditioners in 1949. He worked for the Vietnamese army (then known as the FAVN) from 1952 - 1958. Nguyen Van Nhu married in 1956. He has his first daughter in 1957, first son in 1959, and his second son in 1965. Nguyen Van Nhu remembers that when the Communists took over South Vietnam in 1975, he was asked to work for the Frozen Food Company. He denied the request, he told them that he had been working with A/C only and did not know anything about the Food Processing business. He was charged with resisting the new regime. They confiscated all his tools and he was sent to the labor force 3 days a week, then 4 days, and then 5 days a week. Nguyen Van Nhu remembers his family's life in the Communist regime. In order to survive he had to sell everything he had, including altar, furniture, clothing, etc. Nguyen Van Nhu tells the story about his first 2 attempts of escape by boat and how he was put in jail. After the second time, his house was confiscated, his family had to move to his mother's house. In the jail he and another friend made a plan for the 3rd attempt to escape. He was successful on this time! He brought his 2 sons with him. Now, his youngest son, Duc Nguyen who graduated from the University of California at Berkeley in Mass Communication. Duc Nguyen was the producer of a documentary film with the title \"Bolinao-52\". The film (1 hour) showed a boat trip in which only 52 of 110 persons survived. Nguyen Van Nhu shares his opinion toward: American policy for the Vietnam War; Policies of USA; Chinese Communist and Soviet Union during the war; the future for islands in which the Chinese Communist appropriated in recent years; policies of Vietnamese Communist Government today: Human trafficking, exploitation of people, bribing etc. Nguyen Van Nhu has great anguish over two events: The Tet offense (1968) in which the Viet Cong attacked South Vietnam and the Viet Conga's taking of South Vietnam in 1975. Nguyen Van Nhu is satisfied with his life in the USA, but he will not go back to Vietnam as long as the Communist still exists.
